By Fits and Starts…

Still off-kilter from the reality of the post-election dominance of the Republicans in every level of local and national politics, the Dem leadership finds itself bashed again by the total success of this past Sunday’s Iraqi election.

This is not easy for them to deal with, as any student of MSM organs can attest. First, the MSM told us that red staters trounced the Dem candidates at the polls because they are stupid. Then they denounced the red staters as both stupid and “bloodthirsty” (see, Why Americans Hate Democrats—A Dialogue The unteachable ignorance of the red states Slate Magazine, November 4, 2004 http://slate.msn.com/id/2109218). Then they concluded that red staters are benighted “fundamentalist” (read: Christian) goons. But now, in the wake of President Bush’s magnificent State of the Union Address last night, the Dems appear to be waking up to reality. To their horror, the lib dem establishment is faced with the truth that the American people overwhelmingly reject the entire Democrat agenda.

To wit, Richard Cohen’s sad polemic in today’s WaPo: Giving In to the Mob (WaPo, Thursday, February 3, 2005, page A27) Essentially, Cohen excoriates infamous University of Colorado Liberal Arts Professor Ward Churchill, who was scheduled to lecture to the already converted at Hamilton College on America’s (alleged) sins. Churchill is the evil character who called the victims of 9-11 murders “little Eichmanns” who “…were too busy braying, incessantly and self-importantly, into their cell phones, arranging power lunches and stock transactions, each of which translated, conveniently out of sight, mind, and smelling distance, into the starved and rotting flesh of infants” (killed, he says, by the American Iraq embargo policy), and who got what they deserved. To his credit, Cohen takes this idiot prof to task, though he treats the Churchill situation as if it’s an aberration and not the norm on the elite liberal arts college campuses. Still, it’s a point in Cohen’s favor, and he gets a “B” for effort.
But as if to atone for taking a pro-American (not just a pro-red state American) stance, Cohen can’t help but spew forth the usual Lib / Dem invective against all the stupid and bloodthirsty red staters in this great land. According to Cohen, heroic Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart “caved” under the onslaught wrought by Fox News Commentator Bill O’Reilly, who, “with blood dripping from his evil heart” urged “his deranged viewers” to express their disgust and outrage against Churchill’s appearance
with Stewart. This of course negates the first part of Cohen’s thesis, in which he advises the elite Universities to repudiate speeches by the likes of Churchill (but, then, what is logic and philosophic consistency to a Liberal but an impediment?) Cohen then implores Hamilton College, and by extension all other elite liberal arts colleges, to remain true to their antiquated, extremist ideals, and continue with their ideological death march into the sunset of obscurity and irrelevancy. “Hire some guards. Frisk the audience”, he advises by way of caution, “But don’t cave to the mob”. Make no mistake about it: to Liberal Democrats, Cohen's writing passes for “fair and balanced” in lib land.
