Hollywood Star Discovers New Race; Proves that He is an Idiot

The United States now has its second consecutive Black Secretary of State. Some of the biggest popular stars today are bi-racial (Lenny Kravitz, Halle Barry, and Mariah Carey come immediately to mind). Close to 4% of the total United States population consists of married Black - White couples and their offspring. A Black person sits on the United States Supreme Court. Tens of millions of Black Americans live in total racial harmony with their White fellows. Yet to Hollywood Action-Star Will Smith, romantic scenes between Blacks and Whites are "taboo" because of the ingrained racism of the average American White person.
The idea that American society has been, and continues to be, based on the oppression of racial minorities has long been dogma in the worldview of the liberal-leftist-Democrat Party cadres. According to that Article of Faith, the socioeconomic situation of one particular racial minority—Black Americans—has not only not improved, but has actually deteriorated. That there is no hard evidence of this (and little anecdotal evidence as well!) is of scarce interest to the left wing, post-modernist True Believers. To them, America is an oppressive, racist, sexist, homophobic Leviathan—yes, it must be so, because if the alternative is true then the only logical conclusion is that the left’s entire Weltanschauung is destitute of meaning.
With this in mind, consider the following, reported in today’s MSNBC:

Casting Will Smith’s love interest in “Hitch” was not a simple black or white decision. Eva Mendes was given the role opposite Smith because the moviemakers were worried about the public’s reaction if the part was given to a white or an African American actress, according to Smith. The actor is saying that it was feared that a black couple would have put off worldwide audiences whereas a white/African American combo would have offended viewers in the U.S.
“There’s sort of an accepted myth that if you have two black actors, a male and a female, in the lead of a romantic comedy, that people around the world don’t want to see it,” Smith told the British paper, the Birmingham Post while promoting the flick overseas. “We spend $50-something million making this movie and the studio would think that was tough on their investment. So the idea of a black actor and a white actress comes up — that’ll work around the world, but it’s a problem in the U.S.”
Eva Mendes — who is of Cuban descent — was seen as a solution because apparently, the black/Latina combination is not considered taboo. Sony didn’t return calls for comment."

There are three problems with Smith’s statement (at least). First, what evidence is there that “a black couple would have put off worldwide audiences”? There is no evidence for this, of course, outside of the world of leftist orthodoxy. “There’s sort of an accepted myth that if you have two black actors, a male and a female, in the lead of a romantic comedy, that people around the world don’t want to see it” Really? By whom is this myth accepted? Second, Smith informs us that “the idea of a black actor and a white actress comes up — that’ll work around the world, but it’s a problem in the U.S.”…now, let me understand this. According to Smith, Black Male + Black Female = NG in Europe and in USA; Black Male + White Female = OK in Europe, NG in USA. Yet, direct evidence demonstrates that intermarriage between Blacks and Whites has increased since WWII at an unbelievable rate, resulting in 7 million Americans classifying themselves as mixed-race, primarily Black/White.*** Third, it seems that Smith has discovered a new creature, a new racial being that is neither black nor white. Even the most racist white man in Smith-world can enjoy a movie showing a love scene between this crypto-caucasian and a Black person. The name of this new, not-quite-white creature? “Eva Mendes — who is of Cuban descent”. She “was seen as a solution (not as a person, not as an actress, but as a ‘solution’ – Suburban Cowboy) because apparently, the black/Latina combination is not considered taboo.” The tortured logic underlying Smith’s vile racial bedevilment is so ridiculous, so fantastic, that he might consider applying for a position as Professor of Sociology at Yale University once his box-office magic fades away.

*** Smith's convoluted reasoning is not only contradicted by objective reality, but by uncharacteristically lucid statements from his fellow Leftists:


…nearly 7 million Americans described themselves as multiracial in the 2000 Census, in terms of a voluntary self classification category introduced for the first time. This figure is much higher for children under 18, of whom 4.2 percent were registered as multiracial, compared with 1.9 percent of adults. The major reason, census officials said, was that the number of interracial couples more than quadrupled.

The startling rise of inter-racial marriages during the last half of the twentieth century retraces a fascinating history that begins with the end of World War II, when segregation was the law throughout most of the country.
Romano, a white (Harvard) professor of African American studies who is married to a black man, examines the deeply embedded taboo of interracial marriage in the U.S. Citing studies, surveys, court accounts, media coverage, and interviews with interracial couples, Romano explores how attitudes have evolved, eventually eroding that taboo, within the last 60 years. She notes that the nation's long-held policy of "prohibiting interracial marriages while condoning interracial sex between white men and black women reinforced gender and racial hierarchies." Romano outlines the forces that eventually led to the breakdown of the taboo, from the integration of armed services during World War II to the migration of southern blacks to the North for war-related jobs, exploring the political, cultural, and social history of black-white marriages since the 1940s. The interviews are particularly powerful in conveying the challenges of interracial marriages and the changes in social attitudes since the 1940s. But Romano cautions that the increase in black-white marriages does not signify the end of structural racial inequalities in American society.
