"This kind of contempt for the political and spiritual dignity of people who live in different circumstances never goes away"

Charles Krauthammer nails the libs once again in his syndicated column (Free to Dance in Iraq WaPo, Friday, February 4, 2005 Page A17) What Suburban Cowboy found most interesting--and telling--was the following. Writes Krauthammer, "Iraqis turned out to vote in great numbers, with great enthusiasm and determination...The media have not been as surprised, noted a friend of mine, since the Nicaraguans turned out in their 1990 election to kick out the Sandanistas...the herd mentality of the liberal establishment never changes. They were shocked when those revolutionary darlings in Managua...lost a free election--to a candidate supported by the contras. The liberal cliche of the time was that Third World people care more about food than about freeedom. This kind of contempt for the political and spiritual dignity of people who live in different circumstances never goes away. It simply gets applied serially to different sets of patronized foreigners. Today we are assured with confidence that Arabs, consumed by tribe or religion or whatever, don't really care about freedom either."
Foreigners, Red Staters--what's the difference?
In the immediate aftermath of the November 2004 elections, the CW in liberal circles was that those stupid, stupid red staters voted against their own economic self-interest by selecting Republican candidates everywhere over big-government lib dems. I was reminded of that when I read Krauthammer's writing, specifically this statement: "The liberal cliche of the time was that Third World people care more about food than about freedom. This kind of contempt for the political and spiritual dignity of people who live in different circumstances never goes away. It simply gets applied serially to different sets of patronized foreigners. "--the Third World foreigners in this case being red state voters. Truly, it is impossible for a lib dem leopard to change its spots.
I have long believed that the reason that the lib dems are consistently off the mark in their political prognostications is because their thought is burdened by onerous philosophic underpinnings. That is, because their liberal politics is built on a foundation of ersatz Marxism, they see the world in terms of individual beings constantly striving to better their economic situation. You know, Class Struggle - the secular religion of the Left. That's why the lib dems call red staters "stupid" and "ignorant" and "crazy"--because as they see it, the hated red staters vote with something other than their economic self-interest in mind (or at least what the lib dems consider to be their economic self-interest, but that's a topic for a future post).
Unless the lib dems jettison the antiquated and discredited quasi-Marxism that they hold so dear, they risk becoming the permanent minority party in the United States.
