Winston Smith would understand

In a previous post I discussed the Left’s deft use of Hitler’s idea of The Big Lie to hammer their ideology into the fabric of mainstream American thought. This post concerns a corollary to that technique, which I call the Lie of the Legitimate Source.
The essence of the Big Lie is that by repeating a monumental, outrageous falsehood enough times, and with enough conviction, an authoritative agency (such as the American Mainstream Media – MSM) can convince a large segment of a given population of the veracity of their position, even though the Big Lie is counterintuitive to the target audience. Examples abound, such as the MSM insistence that the Iraqi Street hates America and would rather live under the Saddam Hussein’s Reich than under “American occupation”.
Similarly, the essence of the Lie of the Legitimate Source is that by repeatedly citing information sources carefully chosen by the MSM (such as the virulently anti-American
International Association of Muslim Scholars) , those sources gain legitimacy in the minds of the target audience. Consider the following:

Sunni cleric group calls Iraq's vote illegitimate
The Associated Press
Updated: 7:16 a.m. ET Feb. 2, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq’s leading Sunni Muslim clerics said Wednesday the landmark elections lack legitimacy because large numbers of Sunnis did not participate in the balloting — which the clerics had asked them to boycott…Large numbers of majority Shiite Muslims and Kurds took part in Sunday’s election for a new National Assembly and regional parliaments. Although no results or turnout figures have been released, U.S. officials say turnout appeared much lower in Sunni areas where the insurgent is strongest…In its first statement since the balloting, the Association of Muslim Scholars said the balloting lacked legitimacy because of low Sunni participation. The Association called months ago on Sunnis to shun the polls because of the presence of U.S. and other foreign troops…

Okay. The question here is: what is this “Association of Muslim Scholars “ (i.e. the “International Association of Muslim Scholars”) that the “leading Sunni Muslim clerics” are associated with? We can start with the following, reported by the Associated Press on 12/26/2004: “CAIRO: A Muslim scholars union yesterday condemned twin bombings this week in the holy Shiite cities of Najaf and Karbala that left 67 people dead. The International Association of Muslim Scholars suggested the attacks could be connected with Zionist (Israeli) and other international intelligence agencies and aimed at damaging Iraq’s social cohesion…The association…is based in London and headed by Egyptian-born Sheikh Youssef Al Qaradawi who lives in Qatar”. This Qaradawi has endorsed suicide bombing, saying: "It's not suicide, it is martyrdom in the name of God, Islamic theologians and jurisprudents have debated this issue. Referring to it as a form of jihad, under the title of jeopardizing the life of the mujahideen. It is allowed to jeopardize your soul and cross the path of the enemy and be killed." See Jihad Watch: : http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/004458.php and http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/003347.php

So, here we have it: the International Association of Muslim Scholars promotes both demented conspiracy theories (“…suggested the attacks could be connected with Zionist (Israeli) and other international intelligence agencies”) and murder (“…It is allowed to jeopardize your soul and cross the path of the enemy and be killed."). And despite this, the AP cites them by the innocuous description “Iraq’s leading Sunni Muslim clerics”.

I tell you, it’s an uphill battle fighting the entrenched biases, distortions, and outright lies spewed forth by the MSM.
